Double Page Spread Template Idea

Research Ideas for Double Page Spread

I like this documentary tv listing because there isn't too much text but yet there is enough to get a rough idea of what the show is going to be about. As you can see the right page is image based. With only a small caption on information about the picture. If i was going to use the style of this particular spread i would have to add more colour, as the 'snippit' we have done for a documentary is aimed at children. However i do not think that children would be reading a tv guide, therefore it would make more sense to aim this to parents but at the same time still use the colour. Aiming this at parents would encourage them to have their children watch the show. Especially if it's a weekly programme, it could encourage parents to make the show be a routine, and watch the show every week to educate their children. I also think it would be a good idea to include images/shots from the short documentary itself.

Research On The Background

Things to include in the argument between America and the UK.

Boston Tea Party

- It was a form of protest bt colonist in a British colony in Massachusetts.
- It happened December 16th 1773
-Men dressed as indians led by a man called Samuel Adams dumped £10,000 (£636,000 by modern day) worth of tea into the harbour.

The Earl
- Built the castle1776 as a hunting lodge but soon changed its name to Boston Castle because he felt that strongly about the American Revolution. He believed America should have their independence.
- The Earl was also expected to fight in the war against America.

Change Of Idea

We are no longer going to include the reenactment because we do not think that it would be suitable for a children TV programme as it would not keep the attention of the children. Instead we are going to have Lisa Blythe and Daniel Simpson wearing plain clothes, a white top and dark trousers. Lisa with the Union Jack on her top, and Daniel with the American Flag. (It would be a good idea that Daniel speaks in an American accent). They are going to have a conversation/argument about the situation surrounding the Boston Tea Party. Just to give children an insight into why Boston Castle is named as it is, and also a little extra information even though it is not to do with Boston Castle but the American War Of Independence.

Newspaper Ad Research

The advertisement above is of a tv programme called csi. Personally i like this because it shows the main characters in order of importance in the programme. It also shows the main location in the background. For my ad i would like replicate this. The image has been edited to give the show a more sinister look, i would use this however reverse it by making the colours brighter, and having an image of Boston Castle in the background, and the presenters in the foreground. And also have blue/bright sky, instead of this dark and dingy colour used in this. In this ad their faces are very serious, so i would also like to change this and have peoples faces alot more happy and excited.

Treatment

History Attack - Jade Dannatt, Daniel Simpson, Becky Marshall, Lisa Blythe

Presenters - Jade Dannatt, Becky Marshall

The Earl Of Effingham - Daniel Simpson

Newspaper Reporter - Lisa Blythe

In my group of 3, we are going to make a children's documentary about Boston Castle. Our target audience is going to be children mainly directed at the age range of 7-13. Our clip would possibly be a snippet of a longer children's programme, or something that teachers would show their pupils in a lesson to teach them about the history of Boston Castle. The mode of address is going to be teacher pupil however it will be very informal but still informative.

Basically within my group we intend to create this small clip by using only 3 locations. First we plan on starting in a classroom at college with a white backdrop. The use of the white backdrop is to make the colours we're wearing to stand out more. As me and Becky plan on wearing bright colours because it is something aimed at young children and bright colours attract and help keep attention. I think it would good to use high angle shots to make the children feel 'bigger' whilst watching this, even though we are more dominant as we are playing the 'teacher' role in the documentary. Also in this part of the documentary We will give a brief like 'Hi kids! Today we're going to be learning about Boston Castle!' and talking a little about it and then cutting to me and Becky (the presenters) to Boston castle, we were thinking about being able to use the top of the castle to cut to. Then we are going to have a video clip of around and in the castle, and maybe some grounds. On top of this we plan on having a voice over by Daniel explaining what we are seeing/filming. In this clip we will have clips of the grounds around Boston castle, Boston castle itself, inside Boston castle and maybe the bricked up Parish Church round the corner from Boston castle.

After this it will cut to a clip of me and Becky stood outside the small door inside college, we tell the children it is a time machine (we will also have a sign on the door saying 'TIME MACHINE') then we open the door and we will either use fade in and fade out editing or we will edit images of me and Becky onto a 'swirly' background with the sound effects used on doctor who. This is to create the effect of time travel. We then jump out from behind a tree however we are going to use the 'old' effect when editing the video because then it shows it is in the past. We also have an idea that there maybe a possibility that we could edit it so that me and Becky are the only things in colour. Showing we are from the future. We then stop and say 'shhh, look! there's the earl!' and the camera then goes to a shot of The Earl and a newspaper reporter interviewing him. The camera goes to a few shots however then after the interview you see us in the background using hand gesture to say 'come on! we're going!'

Then we are going to cut back to a shot of me and Becky and back outside the time machine, saying 'thanks for joining us today kids! see you soon!'

Costumes
Jade and Becky - wearing bright colours to keep the kids attention, funky clothes and pigtails.

Daniel - ( The Earl Of Effingham) 18th century clothes, from the drama section in college

Lisa - Newspaper Reporter, wearing a suit and a hat.

PROPS - Something for the newspaper reporter to be writing on.

The hardest part we are going encounter whilst doing this is going to be doing the reenactment, we have to go back to 1846(ish) using the location as it is today. This is hard because the windows and doors of Boston castle are covered with metal planks, this is obviously an issue to tackle. We plan to tackle this by still showing Boston castle, however only using shot that do not show the windows and/or doors, but only the walls. To make it look as though we are in the past we are going to have try and cut out any sounds such as cars from in the distance, and also film in the early morning when there no cars around at the car park. The costumes will also fit to the diagetic world. We may also add some non-diagetic sounds. We will be using a non diagetic sound when it comes to editing for the time traveling scene.

There will be some health and safety issues in two of our three locations which can all be solved. When filming in the classroom with a backdrop, using the lights at a wrong angle could go into the eyes of the presenters, or they may become too hot. However it can be tested before filming. When filming at Boston we will have to be careful as there is a car park, and also the chance of falling down the small hill. However these can be solved by simply being careful.

Locations

For the 'time machine' we are using a really small door in college, we plan on covering the door number with a sign saying 'time machine' and walking into this. Once in the room we plan on using editing going back and forth to mimic the use of a the tardis in doctor who and using the same sounds.

Editing Idea

We have an idea we could do a reanactment of The Earl Of Effingham answering questions for a newpaper. So I have done a small practice to show what kind of editing i think would be appropiate because of it being a newspaper and because of the fact it is aimed at children.

Cbeebies - Colour and Images

This is only a very short analysis however it just show the kind of colours that attract children and how they are used. It gives us an idea of what kind of bright colours to use, and as we know Cbeebies are a successful company we can trust.

Done using http://www.mindmeister.com

This is an internet based mind map in which you can share your work with the people you want and they can also edit it. This is a good idea for this as we are not in the same group at college and we can post ideas whenever we like on here and change them if we like.

KTA2 Homework

- Woke my mum up while recording myself. - What else i was going to say.

It is vital that in a documentary that a sense of real place is made. For example using location to show the importance of what is real. In this documentary it heightens the realism and also deeply helps the visual aid. If someone was just describing the animals and their surroundings, it would most definitely not be as affective. Also in this documentary there is a use of non diagetic sounds, this creates a fast pace whilst watching the chaos on screen.
In this documentary the producers have used real locations, people and events. Clearly this is realistic to the viewer. Because this is a nature documentary, it does not have a biased opinion, as it is all fact.

There are some camera angles that show dominance in the animal kingdom. For example in the screen show below, a shark swims over the camera underwater. This shows the power and dominance this animals has both over human beings and the creatures in the wild.

Images Of The Castle

- I think is a good website for both images and information on the Castle.

Boston Castle Documentary Ideas & Information

I am going to be working in a group of three to complete the task for Boston Castle. So far two of us have come up with the idea to base the documentary on a childrens TV programme. This would involve making the documentary interesting and appealing to children, using bright colours, simple yet explanatory, etc. This is only a draft idea.

Information

The Past -

'Boston Castle was built, as a shooting lodge, by Thomas 3rd Earl of Effingham in 1776.

The Earl, being a nobleman with liberal ideals, approved of the American Colonists’ rights for their independence. As deputy Earl Marshall of England and a commissioned officer in the army, the Earl of Effingham was expected to fight for George III against the rebelling American colonists.

When a controversial tax on tea was levied on the colonists by the British, they angrily resisted by dumping 342 chests of tea into the harbour at Griffin’s Wharf. This act. which was known as the Boston Tea Party ultimately triggered off the American war of Independence

Rather than fight in a war which he considered to be unjust, the Earl resigned his commission. In an impassioned speech in the House of Lords, the Earl spoke of the injustice of the proposed taxation to be levied upon tea, stating that Britain had no right to exercise this power.

So strong was his opposition to the events in the Americas that he decided to name his new shooting lodge Boston Castle. The castle was the scene of many parties but “tea that obnoxious beverage” was barred.'

Semiotic Analisyse - Videos ( summer homework)

To teach a person something effectively is it vital the teacher has a way connect with the learner, finding an interest in which you can compare situations, events, people, etc. In a teacher student situation, say in school, it is much easier to connect as you can keep a conversation and ask question. It is a personal learning experience. However learning through tv is very different. All questions have to be answered within a small time period, without anything actually being asked. They also have to keep the viewers' attention the whole time. To do this you have to use a variety of techniques, such as visual affects, simulations, re-enactments, professional speakers and clips that 'document' the reality of what the documentary is about.
I am going to look at 3 different kinds of documentaries and pick out key points about each video, to point out what makes them a documentary and what makes them effective.

Introduction to Unit G324; Advanced Portfolio - Assessment

The purpose of this unit is firstly to assess your ability to plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills (AO3); secondly to assess your ability to apply knowledge and understanding in evaluating your own work, showing how meanings and responses are created (AO2); and finally to assess your ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate research (AO4).The unit requires you to engage with contemporary media technologies, giving you the opportunity to develop your own skills in these technologies. It also enables you to develop the skills of presentation that are required for further study at higher levels and in the workplace.

Question 7 - Evaluation

I would like to point out me and brother dont have a lisp. Its the microphone!

Evaluation - Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Web 2.0 (blogs)
I was already familier with using things such as blogs on the internet, however I learnt how to handle and manage a blog much more sufficiently in order to keep update with my work. It was also fun to do the layout of my blog, although I have had to change my background and colours because my original image stopped working and I was not able to get it woking again. But from this i made my blog look simple, but yet attractive.

Photoshop Elements
I had never used Photoshop before, so this was all very new to me. Although i did manage to pick up the skills pretty quickly. I liked being able to use the magic wand tool to delete the background, and then using the eraser to feather the edges of the image to make it look neater. Another I enjoying being able to do was use the plaster tool to get rid of any defects on faces. Overall i think Photoshop was really easy to use and if i was to produce something similar or the same, i would certainly use Photoshop.

Quark Express
I did not like this as much as Photoshop, it wasn't as easy to use because of the way it was set out and its uses. It is much more text ideal rather than Photoshop which is for images. I liked being able to lay out the columns easily and linking them, this made it easier to do an arrange the articles on my double page spread. I think if i was to do this again I would like to try and see what i could do on photoshop. Also because I have experienced problems with exporting work to a PDF file on Quark. Using photoshop would prevent this problem.

Wednesday, 6 May 2009

Evaluation - Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience by using large image as a cover image, the cover image is a large face, staring directly at the reader. There are also other things I have used in order to attract audiences. I have used the pull quote 'I could spy on naked birds' This is not only an interest quote for readers to want to know more, it is also speaking to reader to as if they are close, using a peer to peer mode of address. Within the magazine there is a predominate use of peer to peer mode of address, for exampe the way Mick talks to the audience. Beacause of this the reader will feel much more comfortable with the magazine, compared to if it was parent to child mode of address. Even though the other pages are not done, some of them are informative, this means that they would have a teacher pupil mode of address.

Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The text on the page:
Our readers tend to be aged 14 to 26. These are mainly students in school, college and university. However it is a more male dominant magazine due to hobbies and past times, such as playing on game consoles. Alot of the readers would also be those that use the internet often, therefore a website would be ideal. They’re the kind of people that enjoy going to gigs and on nights out, and also house parties and socialising.
They are also the kind of people that enjoy going to festivals, such as leeds, and that is what the tent represents. My magazine is aimed at people in both full time and part time jobs, as its something to read out of personal interest. Also to those who use technology, such as the laptop, ipod and phone, all these things are something that play music.

Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that a media institution such as Bauer may distribute my magazine. This is because Bauer have experience in distributing a mainstream rock magazine like Kerrang! They are a conglomerate so my magazine would have a higher chance of having a high circulation as it is a mainstream magazine. Also because Bauer is a conglomerate company, the public would be able to access information from Gnasty in more than one way. Like Kerrang! It would be possible to have a website, Tv channel and radio station.

Evaluation - Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I think my magazine does represent a particular social group, this is because it features very mainstream bands, my magazine i think appeals to more indie and pop-punk fans due to the bands featured. Although this is very stereotypical there are features of my magazine that indicate this. For example my masthead font is broken up and scratched away. This encodes the magazine is gritty and represents that is could be an older sticker that has partly scratched away - like on a girls mirror or a guitar. The images that are also on my front cover look like they have been put in frames and thrown onto a desk, this represents mess, and the pop-punk stereotypical person is messy, and tends to have a messy room.

Representations can be read in different ways, depending on who is reading it, however the reader is not supposed to know that the representations are there. For example the bright colours on my front cover appeal to those people who are more lively and 'bright' themselves, like punks may find this magazine appealing just because of the house style colours used.

Tuesday, 5 May 2009

Evaluation - Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My magazine uses many features of a real media product, this is to replicate and hope that my magazine looks authentic. Some features I have used include a masthead, a simple and obvious feature but yet this is one of things that ‘pulls’ readers to a magazine. My images are also anchored, for example on the front of my magazine I have 3 images, all anchored by ‘TASTE OF CHAOS REVIEW PLUS POSTERS’. For my front cover I have also clearly used a cover image, this is another obvious feature, but is once again effective. I believe my magazine challenges real media product, this is because I have used bright colours and bold text, using bright green and red as a contrast.

(Left: Rocksound Center:Gnasty(my own) Right:Kerrang)
The left cover is what I used to research magazines and what mine could look like. Although mine is quite different, there are features taken from this in order to use its conventions of a magazine. From Rocksound I have used the idea of the images over each other, advertising the free posters, and to adverise the free posters i have used a sticker image. Like both rocksound and Kerrang I have a top banner, and like kerrang i have a bottom banner, saying what bands are in this issue. I thought this look more appealing rather than a list down the side of the page like Rocksound.

Conventions Of a Double Page Spread

There are many conventions to a double page spread, one of them is that the double page spread has a main image, a large one and also perhaps some smaller images relating to the article.
The article could be a review, and interview or just a band profile. The mode of address most of the time in an article is peer to peer however when informing the reader it becomes more teach pupil. Articles also tend to have a pull quote, for example in mine I have 'Bill Clinton W*nking on my guitar', this is larger than the rest of the text, in order to 'draw' the readers in, its also usualy something interesting.

Treatment

GNASTY
- Jade Dannatt

- with the help of Vicky and Rob!

My piece of work is a music magazine. It is aimed at teenagers, both male and female. However I think at it is more male predominant due to the dark colours used. I am aiming that my magazine will be read by people that listen to rock music, from the soft sound of oasis to metal bands such as Slipknot, because they're very mainstream bands. It's a mainstream rock magazine, focusing on mainstream and also new upcoming bands.
I will be using images i have taken in the past for my contents page, from gigs I have been to, and musicians. These were taken in various places. For my main feature I am using a friend, who is in a band and also plays various instruments. He will be wearing casual clothes.
I have already taken some photos of him that will be suitable for the inside of the magazine, for the double page spread. These were taken at his house and in his studio, however even though I used lighting from different angles, they were not all suitable due to the fact the walls were 'cushioned'. Therefor i will be bringing him into college to take some photos using the screen. Props have already included a guitar and motorbike.

I have already interviewed Mick, I have asked him about his band and things such as influences, however i did not wish for this to be entirely focused on his band, but to get to know him. Therefore there are also random questions.
My double page spread is set out into have one main image on the right side, and also smaller images placed on both pages, in this places I will have smaller images that relate to the articles - not all i have taken myself but cartoon pictures. There are 4 columns of writing.

While doing this I have not come across any health and safety issues, my locations are already set, as I only have to take some more pictures in college. However there may be some safety issues using the lighting because if there may be a chance that the lights may blind Mick, although I plan on controlling this by testing the lights.

Photographs

On my font cover I am going to using a friend called Mick Phillips, he is in a band called Bullets and Numbers and I am going to be doing a feature on him, speaking to him about his band.
Because he is the feature of my magazine I will also be using him for my double page spread. The photos I will use will be of him and his guitar (as he plays guitar in his band). I will also use some smaller pictures which relate to the questions in the article interview. I will also use some smaller pictures of him on the article. The interview will be asking him firstly about his band, and then move onto getting to know him abit better, like more personal and interesting questions.

On the contents page I will use photograps that I have taken myself in the past, such as live bands, band members i have met, etc. Same for the front cover.

Todays lesson...

Today in this lesson i feel that my skills on photoshop developed as i found doing certain things hard, however i overcame these and ended begning a successful draft.

Five rules to taking pictures for the cover

Rule One No cluttered background
Rule Two Make sure you focus on the lead singer if it is a band shot so you know who they are - If it is a singel artist make sure it is a medium shot or a close up.
Rule Three Leave room for a masthead and don't cut heads off!
Rule Four No high angle shots, fine for double page spread.
Rule Five Animate your band, make sure they're doing something and looking at the camera.

Starter Task

This week I have researched mastheads and come to a final 4, I am yet to pick a final one through testings these with images on Photoshop.

I completed my ideas for my magazine, learning that my masthead must be clear so it can be read from a distance.

Finally I have learnt that the image for my front cover must have space at the top, so that the masthead can be seen clearly.

Tuesday, 10 March 2009

This masthead would be most suitable I think because of the way there is a soundline acting as some sort of strikethough - fitting very well with the fact the magazine is going to be a music magazine. However this makes it harder to read.

I like this masthead because of the way the letters are broken and lines are flowing, this makes it look decorative, but not too much otherwise it would not be suitable for a rock magazine.

This masthead gives people the idea that it has been broken, as the letters are broken up and within the N there are cracks, making it look like broken glass.

This is my personal favourite, as i like the way the shading and also the doodles around the lettering itself, however this may not be able to be used, considering the fact it might not be easy to read from a distance, for example if it was on a shelf in a shop.

Lesson Objectives For Tuesday 10th March 2009

By the end of this lesson I would have liked to posted a blog with ideas for my masthead.

Thursday, 5 March 2009

Mainstream VS Niche!

MAINSTREAM
A mainstream magazine is one that is published and has a large circulation every month or week. It also has a large audience, for example Kerrang! features mainstream bands and a wide range of genres.

NICHE
A niche magazine is one that aims to a smaller audience, for example a magazine like Terrorizer, and its circulation is only small. Its audience is much more specific, its sub-genres are less popular, like thrash metal.

Tuesday, 3 March 2009

My 3 Ideas

Idea One

(Audience) A magazine aimed at males and females. It would be a mainstream magazine that focuses on rock music, but all sub-genres of rock music (like Kerrang!). It would be aimed at 16-24 year olds.
(Sub-Genre) There would be no sub-genre to this because of it being a mainstream magazine.

A name for this magazine...
GNASTY
This clearly represents something being bad, as it is said nasty, however with the G is connotes a symbol of rebellion. Nasty also connotes the behaviour of someone being nasty, and usually rock music is related

Idea Two

(Audience)This would be a niche magazine designed to feature local Sheffield bands, and aimed at the younger population of 16-24 year olds, mainly students, and both a male and female audience.
(Sub-genre) This magazine would have no particular sub-genre either as it features local bands, therefore the sub-genres of music could spread from indie to thrash metal.

A name for this magazine...
SHOOTER
This connotes the fact that the news will be getting to you fast if you read this magazine. As a bullet that is shot from a gun, goes fast.

Idea Three

(Audience) This would also be a niche magazine aimed at both sexes, age 16-24. The genre would be drum and bass.
(Sub-genre) As this would be a drum and bass magazine, this would mean it was to be a niche magazine, aiming its features at a much smaller audience.

A name for this magazine...

CONSIDERATIONS FOR MY MAGAZINES

AUDIENCE

I want my magazine to be aimed at 16-24 year olds, not only is this more 'exciting' because it will be aimed at teenagers, but considering I fit into that age group it will make it easier for me. I also wish for my magazine to be a mainstream magazine because then it will allow me to be more free, however because i like rock music, i am going to make it so that the magazine will cater for people who like rock music. I would also like my magazine to aimed at both males and females, however it will probably look more male dominant.

GENRE
I would like my magazine to have a the sub-genre of rock, making my music magazine a rock magazine.
Both of these factors will determine features such as the content, the titles, style, mastheads, colour and the entire house style.

IPC Media

I am going to be looking at a media company IPC, fulfulling AO2, and also AO4. IPC is another media company, however unlike Bauer these are part of a conglomerate media company, as they are owned by Time.Inc, who are owned by Time Warner. IPC is broken into 5 sections. It is estimated that over 26 million UK adults read an IPC magazine. IPC publish 80 magazine, these include, TV guides, Music, Womans Magazines (Beauty, Fashion and life), Home, Mens Magazine, Sport, Celebrity news and also Hobbies.

However I will be looking at the Music magazines that IPC produce.

Uncut is a music magazine which looks at music and film, focusing on both new and old (classics). It is a monthly magazine and its circulation is around 91,028. It is sold in any English speaking place around the world. The magazine has recently lowered the amount of information that is featured on films. Over the years they have featured 'icons' on their cover, including John Lennon, Jimmy Page, Queen and Led Zeppelin.

Its audience is mainly for an older generation, to those who were, and are fans of more classic rock, such as Led Zeppelin.
Uncut also have a website, advertisements from this can help to sell the magazine.

Guitar & Bass is clearly for those who are learning, or play either guitar or bass. Within the magazine they have techniques, tests and also feature interviews and lessons from guitar legends, past, present and also the people Guitar & Bass see to be successful in the future.

The audience for this magazine would be any age, it would depend entirely on hobbies, in this case playing the guitar or bass.

NME is one of the best selling music magazines in the world, and also one of the most respected. The first issue was published in 1952 and since then has won awards, made its own award ceremonies - hence NME Awards every year. They deliver contempory music news. NME also has its own site, and gets millions of views every month. The magazine sells 56,284 every week, as it is a weekly magazine. NME also do their own tours - like Kerrang!

NME appeals to a wide audience, however the main audiences being 16-24, and going into the 24-36 (maybe above this). Its audience also defines itself to those who listen to rock music. NME mainly interview and review indie bands, making this magazine mainly cater for an audience that listen to indie rock music.
Because NME is such a popular magazine, it has its own website, and its own TV Programme, this helps it promote itself as it is a cross/multi media company. NME also uses its own magazines to promote things such as the tour, as will other magazine such as Kerrang!
